Everyone who buys a new car wants to choose something safe for themselves and those around it, but it isn’t always easy to decide which models make the safest choices. This is where US news comes in.

Our vehicle ratings include a safety score of 1 to 10. Each vehicle score is based on two factors: crash test results from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), plus a number of safety features. Advanced included as standard equipment. These technologies include things like forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keeping assist.

A number of 2020 models have a perfect 10 out of 10, and many of them have a rating of 9 or higher. Vehicles that achieve a high degree of safety are good candidates to consider when shopping. Simply.

In the following slides, we’ve included the safest cars in our ranking, with the model with the highest safety score in the last slide. When multiple models scored the same safety score, we broke the tie in favor of the model with the highest overall score in our ranking. The Honda Civic, which has reached the final stage of the Best Compact Car for Money 2020 award, is generally an excellent choice. All Civic body styles achieved the highest safety scores from the NHTSA and IIHS. The IIHS also awarded Civic the highest rating for the effectiveness of collision avoidance functions. The Civic also received a good rating for its headlights. 2020 Civic was awarded the organization’s Top Safety Pick.

Standard safety features on base models include a rearview camera, automatic high beams, forward collision warning, anti-collision braking system, lane keeping assist, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control and off-road attenuation. The Honda LaneWatch blind spot monitoring system is optional.

Cadenza has the highest forward collision protection rating and an acceptable (second highest) rating for headlamp strength and visibility. It has not yet been tested by the NHTSA.

The Cadenza comes standard with a Rear View Camera, Rear Parking Sensors, Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Lane Change Assist.
